Faster, More Comfortable Smiles
Metal braces are still the most common type of braces in orthodontics, as they have withstood the test of time. However, they’ve recently undergone some major updates—gone are the days of pokey, painful metal braces with bulky headgear.
About Damon Self-Ligating Metal Braces
Damon self-ligating braces are smaller, smoother, and more comfortable than conventional braces.
Made of high-grade surgical stainless steel, Damon metal braces straighten your teeth comfortably and gently, without the need for elastics or frequent adjustments or elastic ties.
But, not to worry, if you want to bedazzle your braces, the option to add colors is still available. Damon braces also avoid the need for painful procedures such as tooth extractions, palate expanders, bulky appliances, and headgear.
Damon braces aren’t just simply more aesthetically pleasing and healthier; they are also an advanced technology that straightens your teeth faster with fewer adjustments. With Damon braces, you can expect a 35% faster treatment than traditional metal braces, with a visit to our San Mateo or Half Moon Bay offices only once every 8–10 weeks!

What Happens at My Braces Appointment?
Before applying the brackets, Dr. Alborzi and the Alborzi Orthodontics team will collect photos and X-rays of your mouth. Sometimes we’ll use our iTero Element scanner to scan each of your teeth and your gums and mouth's layout.
If necessary, this process takes 10-15 minutes and provides an extremely accurate 3D view of your mouth.
After the X-Ray and optional scan, Dr. Alborzi will use this information to create your customized treatment plan. This will include how each tooth needs to be moved to get it in the best possible position.
Dr. Alborzi will decide how to place the brackets based on this information. For example, if you have some teeth that need to be tilted, the placement of those brackets will be different than for teeth that need to be turned.
Once the brackets have been attached, Dr. Alborzi will insert the wire.
Bends in the wire will provide different types of pressure on different teeth. A bend in the wire is how most orthodontists create specific and precise movements that will give you a smile you can’t wait to show off!
What Are Braces Made Of?
Brackets
The brackets that Dr. Alborzi uses are durable and made from a mix of stainless steel, nickel, and other metals.
Brackets have little hooks or doors where Dr. Alborzi will thread a wire. The bracket can then be secured by closing the door.
Glue
This is what Dr. Alborzi will use to attach the brackets to your teeth. It’s common to attach the bracket directly to the tooth with mouth-safe orthodontic glue.
Spacers
Also referred to as separators, these small elastic “donuts” or rings can be used by Dr. Alborzi to create space in between your teeth when needed, typically before your bands are placed.
Wire
This thin piece of metal runs from one bracket to another. Dr. Alborzi will change the shape and curvature of the wire to move your teeth in the right direction.
The wire will attach all of your bottom or upper teeth together in many cases. We might occasionally cut the wire if connecting just a few teeth is better for your treatment plan.
Orthodontic Bands
These are stainless steel rings that are cemented to your teeth using dental bonding agents. These bands can provide an anchor for your braces and orthodontic appliances, but they’re not used for everyone.
Dr. Alborzi will determine if your treatment will benefit from orthodontic bands at your initial consultation.
