The Benefits of Damon Clear and Metal Braces

The Benefits of Damon Clear and Metal Braces

Once upon a time, straightening your smile meant going through a long and often tedious process with traditional braces. Previous designs were more obvious, less comfortable, and could sometimes even be painful. While the results were worth it in the end, it certainly took a lot of time and perseverance to get there! Fortunately, modern orthodontics has made it easier than ever to improve your oral health. Today’s patients have a wide variety of affordable treatment options to choose from, including the Damon Braces system.

Alborzi Orthodontics is proud to offer Damon metal and Damon Clear braces, an innovative approach to treatment that can give patients a more rewarding experience with better results. Compared to traditional metal braces, Damon braces are a relatively new treatment method! Although orthodontists have been using them consistently for the last thirty years or so, you may not be familiar with what they are and how they work. To learn more about what this system is and how it can deliver faster treatment with fewer appointments, keep reading below!

What are Damon braces? How do they work?

Unlike traditional braces that use elastic tie-ins, Damon braces are self-ligating. That means no elastic or metal ties are required, as the braces are attached to a “shape memory” wire instead. This wire is very light, capable of connecting the slide brackets without the pressure that traditional elastics often produce. These components will move your teeth gently over time, with fewer adjustments and a more comfortable treatment experience.  It eliminates the need for expansion, extraction or surgery in the majority of situations for which they are recommended.

The tie-ins that we typically use with traditional braces cause friction and pressure. This can result in soreness, pain, damage to roots and may even add to the total treatment time. The Damon system is different, using a patented slide mechanism to hold the archwire in place while allowing the teeth to move freely and quickly without as much friction. Since there are no elastic ties, no tightening is required. That also makes Damon braces easier to keep clean therefore healthier gums.

Damon braces are extremely efficient at fixing a wide range of orthodontic issues. In fact, they often work faster at correcting bad bites, closing gaps and aligning teeth than other treatments might. Not only that, but patients will often see noticeable signs of progress in a relatively short amount of time. This can provide small bursts of excitement and encouragement throughout the treatment process!

The Damon system has been designed to be more discreet than traditional braces, but for those who want a less visible option, we also offer Damon Clear braces. These can be the perfect solution for image-conscious teens and adults.  If you still don’t want Braces, Dr. Alborzi can help you with Invisalign with the same great outcomes.

The Benefits of Damon Clear and Metal Braces

What are the benefits of Damon braces?

We’ve found that Damon braces offer a number of benefits over traditional braces. We’ll highlight some of these advantages here!

Less discomfort

A self-ligating system like Damon keeps the archwire in place with a sliding mechanism. This allows for more freedom of movement and also means that no manual tightening is necessary. This differs from traditional brackets, which use elastic ties and active clips. These can sometimes create friction against the tissues in the mouth and the teeth. Their edges are also more likely to catch on the lips and cheeks, which may cause some discomfort or pain. Damon braces are gentler on the mouth, but you don’t have to take our word for it—patients have reported 60 percent less discomfort with this innovative system!

Faster treatment times with fewer appointments

The slide mechanism we use with Damon braces doesn’t require ties, so your elastics won’t need to be changed quite as often as they would with traditional braces. Adjustment appointments with Dr. Alborzi will be less frequent, too.

The Damon design can also speed treatment times up! Although the time spent in braces will vary from case to case, our patients experience an average of 37-40% shorter treatment time. That means Damon braces may come off 6-9 months sooner than traditional braces!

Achieve a better smile

Any time a patient is in braces, the ultimate goal is a healthy and attractive smile. In the early phases of treatment, we focus on shifting the teeth into more desirable positions by applying gentle pressure over time. Damon braces do this but also widen the arch! This results in exceptional tooth and jaw alignment, producing the healthiest and most balanced smile possible.

Dental hygiene is easier

Because Damon braces don’t use elastics, it’s more difficult for plaque and bacteria to collect throughout the treatment process. And there are no wires or ties to trap food particles, either! That makes brushing and flossing much easier and effective. Maintaining a good oral hygiene routine will keep the teeth and gums clean and healthy. It will also help the treatment plan progressing as it should.
